Interview with Wayne Pritchard about Norman & the Trust
|
To many Norman Mann may be just a name on the bottom of an email, but to many many more Norman Mann is a tenacious, fun loving, spirited individual who has touched the hearts of many of us. Norman is a father, a brother, a son and to most of us a very special friend.
Norm has encountered most of Africas perils in one form or another during his career in the bush and the irony is that niether elephants nor lions could get the better of him, but something as small as a shellfish could have had such a devastating affect on him.
It was a during a trade show in Osaka, Japan that Norm accidentally consumed something which had, possibly during its preparation, become contaminated with shellfish. The affect was immediate and severe and Norm was rushed to hospital where the emergency room doctors worked on him for several hours to restore his breathing. He was then admitted to ICU where he lay for 10 days fighting various infections including pneumonia. Having seen Norm on his second day in ICU in Osaka, I was completely shattered by what I saw and never expected to see Norm come through this ordeal alive. The fact that he did can not only be attributed to the Wonderful hospital staff and in particular Dr Tsuruwa, but also Norms incredible fighting spirit. The incident caused Norm to go into shock and during is time in the emergency room he became hypoxic, (oxygen starvation).
Norman spent 10 days in ICU before he was moved to a high care ward to complete his stabilisation. Norm returned to SA 6 weeks later and was admitted to Netcare Rehabilitation Centre in Auckland Park. Here he underwent intensive therapy but unfortunately had to be released to the care of Sue, Norms wife, at home. It is further unfortunate that niether medical aid nor workmans compensation would fund his stay at the centre and from then all rehabilitation costs are for Norms account. Norm has progressed a long way since his time in ICU and is currently undergoing various types of therapy. At this time Norm is able to walk with assistance, he is only able to see light and dark, his hearing is perfect, in fact probably better than before, or at least so says Sue. He is not able to use is left arm, but can partially use is right arm, his speach is slow and often garbled.
Norman Mann has had a long and distinguished career in the toursim industry and has worked throughout southern Africa. The support from the industry has been nothing short of fantastic, with many people asking how it is that they can help. To this end we decided to establish the Norman Mann Trust Fund, in attempt to raise funds for his care and rehabilitation.
Whilst we would like the Norman Mann Trust Fund to support Norm we would like to continue the fund with the view to assisting other individuals from within the industry who find themselves in a similar situation. |
